Michael Harris had previously been selling his grapes to Paul
Hobbs Winery, but really wanted to make his own wines, so he went
out and hired one of Napa's hottest winemakers, Mark Herold. Herolds
impressive resume includes such notable wineries as Joseph Phelps,
Carter, Kobalt, Hestan, Buccella and Meris.

Harris Estate
Jakes Creek Cabernet
The second offering crafted by Mark Herold, Harris Estates Jakes
Creek Vineyard Cabernet comes from the latest ripening block on
the Estate. Denser, brawnier and less immediately accessible than
the Lakeview, the purple-black Jakes Creek offers up aromas of
pungent black currants, rich black soil, dark chocolate and coffee
bean, with notes of licorice, spiced plum and toasted vanilla.
On the palate, the wine is massively structured, with a robust
tannic skeleton wrapped in dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee with
muscular lift and a good amount of acidity. Big and edgy, the
finish goes quickly into powdered chocolate and plum skin as the
tannins begin to clamp down. It is big and sexy now, but give
the wine another year or two to round out the tannins and enjoy
over the subsequent 10+ years. Only 180 cases produced from this
2.5 acre vineyard.

2004 Harris
Estate
Lakeview Vineyards Cabernet
Mike and Treva Harris purchased a 48 acre property on Diamond
Mountain in 1997 and began planting three distinct vineyard sites,
Trevas Vineyard, Jakes Creek Vineyard and Lakeview Vineyard. In
2002, friends Peter and Paulette Story of one of our favorites,
St. Helena Winery, introduced the Harrises to Mark Herold of Merus,
Kamen and other fames. Quoting the from the Harris website: Mark
walked Treva's hillside vineyard and said, If I can't make great
wine from this fruit you should fire me!". By the way, he
is still employed. Lakeview Vineyard is a 2.25 acre site with
2 different cabernet clones and a tiny quarter acre of Petit Verdot.
Wound up tightly when we first tasted the wine at the start of
the year, it showed little more than prodigious amounts of minerality,
with the fruit following behind, linear and subdued. In the intervening
months, the hard, tannic shell has cracked open and the fruit
has come pouring out! The nose follows a classic Napa red fruit
profile of dense red currant, red licorice, and raspberry jam,
with notes of powdered baking chocolate, vanilla espresso and
Juniper, all still dominated by a flint and chalk minerality.
Dense red and purple fruit wash across the palate, with generous
helpings of mocha, dark chocolate and hints of mint, fennel and
blood orange. Great acidity and massive amounts of fine grained
tannins continue to keep the concentrated fruit bracketed and
sharply focused, and build an awesomely long, powerful finish.
Allow 4-5 years for the wine to continue to emerge from its chrysalis,
and enjoy for a further decade. A fantastic offering, no wonder
R. Parker calls Harris Estate an impressive newcomer that merits
serious attention.
